Red Cross’ Mama Bag Kit gets UGX 59 Million from MTN

Release date:4/1/2008
Kampala, Uganda: MTN today handed over UGX 59 million to the Uganda Red Cross Society (URCS) Mama Bag Kit project as the proceeds from the 2007 MTN Kampala Marathon. The contribution was unveiled today at a press conference held at the organization’s premises on Lumumba Avenue.
MTN through the annual MTN Kampala Marathon partnered with URCS’s Mama Bag project -that seeks to help the Internally Displaced People (IDP’s) in Northern Uganda- with an objective of giving hope to the people whose lives were shattered by the 20-year-old-LRA-led war.
“It is a pleasure for us to work with the Uganda Red Cross such a reputable organization whose humanitarian works have earned it world-wide acclaim,” said MTN PRO Sheila Kangwagye.
“Therefore from the time they requested us to partner with them in this project, we have never looked back. As a company that seeks to work in a happy environment, we further pledge to continue our commitment to this project”.
URCS Secretary General Alice Uwase Anukur commended MTN for the tremendous display of support and affection it has shown to the people of Northern Uganda for the past four years after which she highlighted the challenge that is still ahead in spite of the impending peace deal and resettlement of the people back in their villages.
“Now that people are returning to their homes, the Mama Bag Kit is no longer enough and that’s why we have come up with Mama and Return Kit project”, revealed Anukur.
“The Mama Bag Kit only catered for the expecting mothers in IDP’s but now that people are returning home, more is needed as they strive to rebuild their livelihoods from scratch” she added.
The URSC received UGX 38 million from the 2006 MTN Kampala Marathon and these proceeds went towards catering for about 2,000 mothers and babies.
