Kampala, Uganda: The 23rd World University games are due to take place in France on April 6th 2008. To choose a team to represent Uganda, several universities have started preparations through the MTN National Inter - University Games.

Following the signing of a 3 year partnership between telecommunications giant MTN and NUSFU to officially sponsor the National Inter University Games, the kick off championships have began in various disciplines mainly basketball, cross country running and athletics.

The championships that have attracted a medley of NUSFU accredited universities like Makerere University, Makerere University Business School, Mbarara University, Busoga, IUIU, Kyambogo, Bugema, Gulu university, Ndejje, Nkumba, KIU, KIU Ishaka, and Kumi University started early this month with the cross country championships in Nkozi University. Hot on its heels are the basketball championships set to take place in Gulu from 29th – 30th March.

In the athletics forte, men will run the 12KM event while the women will compete in the 6Km event. Schedules for the subsequent disciplines will be communicated regularly on activity basis.

“This is a major boost to our youth whom we’ve continuously supported in various sporting disciplines that they are passionate about.” commented Sheila Kangwagye, MTN Public Relations Officer.

Kangwagye further divulged that the performance in these championships will be used as a bench mark to select the National University team to compete in the international games in France on 6th April, 2008.

“Since it will also be a first for Uganda as we’ve never sent a team for the international chapter before, we expect a very competitive atmosphere.” She added.

During the championships, MTN will have great offers for the youth ranging from phones, SIM packs, and airtime. Participants will also receive T-shirts, Medals, Trophies and certificates.

MTN is the official sponsor of the Inter - University Games and is accredited by NUSFU.
