MTN announces UGX 50 Million sponsorship for the UPGA

Kampala, Uganda: Telecommunications operator, MTN Uganda today announced a one year sponsorship of UGX 50 million towards the Uganda Professional Golfers Association (UPGA). This is in a continued effort to promote, grow and support the game of golf through the UPGA regionally and internationally.
The Association nominated Deo Akope as the professional golfer to benefit from the sponsorship for the 2010 golfing season. As an amateur golfer, Akope was a three time winner of the Uganda Open in 2001-2002, two time winner of the Rwanda Open in 2003-2004, and one time winner of the Tanzania Open in 2005 and a series of local events.
Deo Akope, who is the current captain to the UPGA also won the Pro category in the 2006 Uganda Open, finished in the top 20 in the 2007 Zambia Open and represented Uganda in the World Cup qualifiers in Malaysia 2007- 2008.
While handing over the company sponsorship to Akope at MTN Towers, MTN General Manager of Corporate Services and Legal, Anthony Katamba, reiterated MTN’s continued commitment to supporting the growth of sports at a professional level.
“This is proof of MTN support of commitment and dedication to ones dreams and aspirations of becoming a great sports performer and MTN will always be sure to step in and provide the necessary support whenever possible.” 
Under the sponsorship, Deo Akope’s travel, accommodation, meal and living allowance costs will be met by MTN. During the year, he will participate in the Sunshine Tour (Royal Swazi Open, Zimbabwe Open, and MTC Namibia Open), the Zambia Open, Asian Qualifying School, the East African Circuit, and the Kenya Open.
